Kyler Murray’s Week 3 performance

Throughout the week leading up to the Super Bowl, Kyler Murray’s future in Arizona has been one of the biggest stories in the NFL. Questions about Murray and the Cardinals began when Murray unfollowed the team on social media. Those questions intensified after ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on Sunday that there was, in fact, a rift between Murray and the organization.

Murray broke his silence on Monday night. Via his Instagram account, the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback replied non-directly that he is “self-centred, immature and finger-pointing.” Murray’s comments were accompanied by a photo of him in Cardinals uniform.

  • “I play this game for the love, my teammates, everyone who helped me get to this point, who believed in me and won the championship,” Murray said. “All this nonsense is not who I am, never been, never will be. Anyone who has stepped between those lines with me knows how hard I work.”
  • “Love me or hate me, but I keep growing and getting better.”

Losing can create negativity, which is apparently part of what happened in Arizona. The last undefeated team in the NFL, the Cardinals won just four more games after a 7–0 start to the season. They were 10–2 before winning only one of their last five regular-season games. Arizona was heavy in a 34–11 loss to the eventual champions in the wild-card round of the playoffs. While they made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2015, last season marked the second year in a row as the Cardinals faded away late in the season.

According to Mortensen, Murray was reportedly embarrassed after the playoff loss and felt he was being made a scapegoat. Rather, the Cardinals’ select stalwarts are expected to communicate with Murray about how he can better deal with adversity, according to the report.

Despite all the perceived drama, Mortensen said the Cardinals expected a calm mind to prevail eventually. And while that may be true, questions about Murray’s future will persist until the Cardinals sign him to a long-term deal. Murray is entering the final year of his rookie contract as he is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2022 season.
