A car requires ongoing maintenance so it operates properly. Many people know to get an oil change regularly, check their tires and be aware of signs of a dying car battery. However, not as many people think about changing their cabin air filter.
In general, you should change it every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, although your owner’s manual will give you a more precise timeline. You should also inspect it regularly and change it if it is dirty, which happens more frequently in more congested areas. If you live in the city and have not changed this filter lately, or if ever, it is time to replace it, as doing so has various benefits.

1. Pollution Buildup
Pollution is everywhere, and in certain cities it is terrible. Exposing yourself to polluted air results in toxic buildup in your body, which has many detrimental effects. Although it is impossible to avoid pollution completely, a clean cabin air filter helps protect the interior of your vehicle from outside exhaust and smog. If you are extra sensitive to pollution, you may want to change your filter more frequently than recommended.
2. Decrease Air Debris in Car
Your vehicle comes into contact with various debris throughout the day. Twigs, leaves, dirt and other debris can get sucked in. Fortunately, the air filter stops them from getting into your car’s interior.
3. Increase Efficiency
Although the filters for car are beneficial for keeping things out, such as pollution, dirt and debris, they can get clogged up pretty quickly, especially in the city. When these things saturate the cabin air filter, it is more difficult for cool air from the air conditioner to get through it. This means that the air conditioner has to work harder, or your vehicle’s cabin will not get as cool as it should.
This is especially unfortunate during summer months. It may take longer for the cabin to cool down, or it may not get very cool at all. Changing to a clean filter increases the efficiency of the A/C as well as the heater during colder temperatures.
4. Reduce Allergens
Pollution and debris are not the only things that a cabin air filter keeps out. It also filters allergens such as pollen. If too much builds up on the filter, this can increase the chances some of it will get into the vehicle. If you are sensitive to allergens, and you notice you are sneezing and have watery eyes when you get into your car, this may be a sign you need to change your air filter.
5. Prolong Engine Life
When the air conditioner and heater have to work harder to get air into your car, the engine has to work harder as well, because it provides power to those systems. If you change your filter more often, not only will your engine work more efficiently, but it will also last longer, as long as you take good care of your vehicle’s other components, and you get regular maintenance according to your vehicle’s needs.
